The Shadow of the Wind

Carlos Ruis Zafron

This novel tells the story of a boy who is the son of a bookseller. He visits the cemetery of books from where he takes away a book. From then on his life and that of the book are caught up with each other. He is offered money for the book and terrible things befall him. The book is set against the background of Franco's Spain and includes at least one highly unpleasant character.

Highly recommended.
