Self Made Man: One Woman's Journey into Manhood and Back
Norah Vincent
The author is a journalist who spent a year living as a man – complete with stick-on stubble. She spent time in different all-male environments: a men’s ten-pin bowling club, lap dancing clubs, 3 weeks in a monastery and then some time as a member of a ‘new age’ men’s group. She also tried internet dating and went on lots of dates with women. Jean found the book intriguing, if not exactly literature. The lap dancing section is pretty sleazy though.

The story of a social experiment where a woman dresses and passes as a man. The out of class experience had greater resonance for Andrew than the male/female. Gill thought it interesting: "Norah Vincent can't think like a man. Innateness doesn't allow for thinking to be as a man." (Someone said "Men together are nice").
