Towards the End of Time
John Updike
Bob likes Updike’s ‘earthy’ style, and finds it
refreshing after some novelists' ‘prissy
prose’. The story is a classic Updike tale of a man in his
mid-60s who is obsessed with sex. The story is set in New England
in 2025 after a nuclear war. Civilisation is starting to fall
apart at the edges – the dollar has disappeared, there are
no police. His wife disappears; a prostitute moves in; squatters
move onto his land. Lots of sex; lots of descriptions of bodily
functions, graphic descriptions of ageing. And also some great
descriptions of nature.
