The Story of Lucy Gault

William Trevor

This is all gloom and tragedy, but extremely well written, of course. The story concerns a nine-year-old girl who runs away from home and sets up a series of tragedies. It is set in Ireland and contains great descriptions of sea and land.

This is about a protestant family in Cork in 1921 who are about to be firebombed out of their home. The parents, mistakenly believing their daughter to be drowned, leave the country. This is the story of the abandoned daughter in her life afterwards. Gill could not believe in Lucy's character (but Doreen could - it was explained by Lucy's belief that it was all her fault). Gill nearly gave up half way through because she couldn't believe in the other main character either. She persevered but wasn't rewarded by greater understanding at the end.

The beginning of the story seemed familiar to her, as if it were already in a short story.
