The Hill Bachelors
William Trevor
Good short stories about ordinary people to whom extraordinary
things happen. Believable and a pleasant read, 100% recommended.

Superb collection of short stories, mainly set in Ireland. Each
story is perfect, brilliant spare style of writing, you are drawn
into the worlds of the characters. Many of the stories are very
moving. For once a book that lives up to its blurb (not present
when writing these notes but something along the lines of "the
best short story writer in the world"). Highly recommended.

Andrew was disappointed not to enjoy this as much as Doreen &
Jean's glowing reviews had him hoping that he would. In some ways
he thought that the writing was "too good" - he often found
himself reading a few pages and although he'd really enjoy the
language being used, he had to go back and re-read the passage
because the narrative hadn't made any impression. "Like a nice
massage" he said "undoubtedly beautiful, but inclined to send me
to sleep".

This is a collection of short stories and Gill enjoyed the book
as a whole, particularly the first story titled "Three People".

Christine didn’t enjoy this collection of stories on the
whole, but thought one of them ‘Against the Odds’ was
wonderful. A story about a widow who finds a man, gets him to
propose to her and then runs off with his money.
