The story of the New Zealand gold rush. The author certainly knew
her stuff and Jean was completely immersed. A rattling good read.

This is set in New Zealand at the time of the gold rush. It has a
mixture of themes: the difficult life of a settler, the gold rush
itself, mysticism with the Maoris, and the story of Harriet.
There is a gradual unravelling of a dark secret. Doreen thought
that the author could find herself up for the "bad sex award" for
a hilarious scene between Harriet and a Chinese market gardener
in a cave.

This was not quite finished but Diana was loving it. The subject is a family that emigrates to New Zealand in the mid-19th century.
