The Master
Colm Tóibín
This is a fictionalised biography of Henry James. It connects the man, his life and his work very well. A big impact was made on James by the serious injury of his brother in the Civil War, although he avoided becoming a soldier himself. It is clear that James was a cold, detached and observant man; he let people down through his single-mindedness. It is fascinating, impressive and well written.

Yet another book about Henry James. This is a novel, not a biography. It seems that James was terrified of relationships. Beautifully written and highly recommended.
