Samuel Pepys: The Unequalled Self

Claire Tomalin

This is the most enjoyable biography that Doreen had ever read. She doesn't like Sam Pepys, but he is an interesting man living in very interesting times. It contains a mixture of the public and private, showing a great deal of research, in addition to a careful reading of the diary.

Another interesting book that gives a very good snapshot of London at a particular point in history. Pepys diary is amazingly detailed on personal and political matters. Christine learned a lot from this book, particularly how Pepys created the modern navy, instigating the training of sailors and wearing of uniforms and how his huge collection of art and books was all lost in a massive fire.
