Doreen read this on the flight out on holiday and wonders why she pursued it to the end. The protagonist thinks he is English but discovers that his father was German. He goes to East Germany where he gets embroiled with trying to help an East German woman to escape, but this all goes horribly wrong. Doreen did not like the main character who she felt needed a good slap. Doreen did learn from the book all about the elaborate spy system in East Germany - even garden gnomes were bugged - so people were careful what they said including in their own homes.
