South from Ephesus
Brian Sewell
Brian Sewell is a well known art critic who has been going to Turkey for about thirty years. South from Ephesus was originally published in 1988. Doreen bought this book because it covers the same territory as did she and Rory on their recent holiday. She was however glad she had not read it before she went as it would probably have put her off the idea of a holiday in Turkey. She described Sewell as a carper and said that the book was full of diatribes about the quality of the hotels, the food, and the lack of hot water. In order to avoid tourists he only went to Turkey out of season to avoid tourists. That said the book did have some redeeming features; it gave you a vast amount of information about local history and Byzantine art. Doreen felt it could only be recommended to someone who had been to Turkey and wanted to know more about it.
