You can hear Alexei Sayle in these short stories - they're very surprising, cover a wide range of subjects and could be sketches for a TV programme. Although they have funny bits, the stories are mostly quite brutal, with similarly brutal endings. They have a strong moral and political tone - shocking but not funny was Gill's verdict.
