Blame Hitler

Julian Rathbone

This was a novel about a man having a late life crisis as he approached the age at which his father died. The main character had a lot of unresolved issues in his life, many to do with the second world war which could all be boiled down to the jokey phrase 'Blame Hitler'. He decides to go to Spain to escape as the critical date approaches but gets himself into even more difficulties.

It was written in the first person narrative and the main character is reading a book by Julian Rathbone on the life of the Duke of Wellington. This struck Andrew as rather an odd device to use although he had to acknowledge that this was the sort of book that the main character was likely to read.
