Enduring Love

Ian McEwan

Doreen is not normally a big fan of this author, but the book had good reviews. She found the first chapter very engaging; you know something bad is going to happen. It is about a stalker; it has a slow menace. Very engaging and highly recommended.

Andrew described 'Enduring Love' as a stunning piece of writing. He was particularly taken by the first chapter. The book was full of haunting images and moved on at a cracking pace. Andrew recommnded that everyone should read it.

This book has also been read by Doreen and Andrew who both enjoyed it. Gavin would also fully recommend it. The first chapter is especially exciting and aesthetically pleasing.

Jean liked this book ... very clever, no horrid nasty bits - but overall it seemed just too, deliberately, coldly clever/analytical/calculating. She doesn't really like McEwan as an author, even when he isn't being horrid.

Caroline noted that she had speed read this book, as she found the story pulled her along. She also commented that it was not a good a read as the Doris Lessing (see above) as she felt that Mc Ewan manipulated the characters and plot. Like everyone else in the book club, Caroline recommended the first chapter with its description of a ballooning accident. However, the later chapter which described a stalking were less convincing. Caroline was particularly critical of the girlfriend's reactions to the news that the main character was being followed.
