David Lodge

This book is about Henry James, his obsessive desire to become a successful playwright and his ultimate failure so to do. It pivots around an humiliating incident at the first night of his play 'Guy Domville'. Painstakingly constructed from masses of source material, Lodge finishes the book with a postscript revealing which bits are true and which he made up (which pleased Doreen very much). All who had read Lodge's other works agreed that he is a textbook clever bugger.

This is a novel based on Henry James' later life. The plot revolves around James writing a play. It is a cleverly written book, mostly historically accurate, but with some parts made up and convincingly so. There are interesting links with du Maurier and his book "Trilby". Recommended - reading this book is "like having a long, warm bath".

Another novelised biography about Henry James, which made Christine realise what a deeply unpleasant man he was. She had had enough and didn’t finish the book.
