The Short Day Dying

Peter Hobbs

Christine was inspired to buy this book because of the review in the Observer newspaper. It is a novel about a Methodist preacher who earns his living as a Blacksmith and is set in Cornwall in the 1870s. One of the other main characters is a woman who is dying of TB. Christine found it compelling and amazing and was surprised that it was a first novel.

A very well written first novel. Written in the first person. A miserable book for a young man! Set amongst very poor people in Cornwall in 1870, a Methodist tries to put others on the right track. He goes to see a young dying woman and starts to lose faith. Need to be feeling fairly upbeat to read it.
