Falling
Elizabeth Jane Howard
Doreen described this book as 'Middlebrow - better than Joanna
Trollope but not great'. Author tends to write romances with a
bitter streak. An unusual story: a romance between two people in
their 60s. From the beginning we know that the man is after the
woman's money but he hides this with great charm and
attentiveness. Quite nasty. The woman has been badly hurt in the
past and does fall quite badly. Well written and very persuasive.
The chapters alternate between the two characters.

Read this very quickly as a holiday read. Moves briskly on and
gets drawn into the story of Henry, living rent-free on a boat
and Daisy, living in a holiday cottage recovering from an unhappy
past. The two get romantically involved. Caroline lost confidence
in the Henry character and the story lost momentum as a result.
All ends shockingly nastily. Not something to be taken too
seriously.

A story about a woman past middle age and a con man. The story is
gripping but I found I didn't care much. I couldn't really
believe in either character.

Recently televised. Very depressing but well written and
containing more than an element of truth... ladies of a certain
age beware...
