Snow Falling On Cedars

David Guterson

An undemanding (middle-brow, even) page-turner about a mixed American/Japanese community on a small island off the North-west coast of the USA, set in the mid-50s. Part whodunit, part court-room drama but the strength of the book is in the description of the island's history and the racial tensions that come about after the war.

The story of a Japanese man accused of murder in a remote fishing community on the north-west coast of America shortly after WW2. It could have been a tense court room drama in the classic mould as there is a good story here. But the author pads this out with a lot of worthy material about the war and the history of the characters.
