The Good Doctor
Damon Galgut
Gill bought this because a) it was on a 3 for 2 offer, b) she
heard part of a review about it on the Radio, and c) it has been
nominated for two prizes. However, she found its portrayal of
hospital life in a backwater of post-apartheid South Africa
depressing, especially the two main characters (the "good" doctor
and the "bad" doctor) who are both white South African, and the
poverty of the black South Africans in the townships.

Seán did not particularly enjoy this book as he felt it lacked force or moral conviction. It is set in a hospital in South Africa and the 'good doctor' turns up as an idealist but it failed to hold Sean's interest. The doctor's relationship with his girlfriend was ridiculous.
