The Hungry Tide

Amitav Ghosh

Seán quite liked this, in spite of the predictability of elements – particularly the relationship between the American visitor and the Indian businessman.

The book is set in the swamplands of the Ganges delta, where people live on islands with land below the peak water level and fear the Bengal tigers, which can swim. The book is strong on local colour and atmosphere and portrays the people and their lives well, but is less convincing on the relationship between east and west.
