Charlotte Gray
Sebastian Faulks
This book is set in France during the second world war. The main
character is a scottish woman who has a passionate affair with a
RAF pilot who then disappears. She is then recruited by the SOE
to work as an undercover agent in France. The story tells of a
small town in France dealing with the transportation of Jews out
of the country. Doreen recommended this book.

Jean had commented that she loved Birdsong by the same author.
This book she said was good but not as good. Jean thought that
Charlotte Gray was a rather harrowing read. It dealt well with
its subject (WW2, the French resistance, the RAF etc.) very well
but she found the insane love affair between the title character
and an airman hard to sympathise with. Doreen said that she
thought it was a very good book.

Andrew described this book as a well written love story set in
WW2. He found the first section of the book (RAF pilots etc. in
England) a bit gung-ho but then the story really picked up in
France. The section that dealt with the holocaust victims was
moving (and harrowing in the extreme). Andrew commented that he
particularly liked the character of the French resistance
fighter.

Not the sort of book Gavin would normally read as it's a bit of a
romance. Very interesting on French politics and the Resistance.
Good but not brilliant. Recommended.

The film was better than the book.
