Diary of an Ordinary Woman
Margaret Forster
Gill had just read this "edited" diary which she found completely gripping from start to finish. It follows the diaries of fictional Millicent King who was born in 1901 and lived till 1995 - most of the twentieth century. In particular the parts about the second world war, when Millicent is in London and what happened to her and her family there. Gill found it very hard to put down. Margaret Forster says that she doubts that there is such a thing as an "ordinary woman". Like Alan Bennett, the attraction is that you feel that you can relate to aspects of Millicent's life - such things happened in your family, or you remember them happening. Highly recommended.
