Zennor in Darkness

Helen Dunmore

Set in 1917 and tells a very good story of a young aspiring artist who lives with her father. DH Lawrence makes an appearance and the various relationships between the girl and Lawrence and her cousin and her father are explored. There is a fine description of the impact of the war on the community. The book is strong on landscape but contains some hackneyed phrases on the turn of the plot. Not really recommended.

This is the author's first book and Gill thinks it's her best (as does Doreen). It is set in the Cornwall village of the title in the First World War when there is a lot of anti-German feeling and anxiety about possible German attacks from across the channel. Into this atmosphere arrives DH Lawrence with his German mistress!

Gill thinks Helen Dunmore writes very well about places and although she has never been to Zennor feels as if she has now she has read the book.
