Signals of Distress

Jim Crace

Gill thought this an excellent book. She noted that this was her second favourite book by the author - 'Gift of Stories' was her personal favourite 'Signals of Distress' is set in 1836 and deals with the issue of slavery ( which was legal in America though not in Britain where the book is set). Gill said that she found the main character rather pathetic, a bit of a do-gooder. Gill recommended this book.

Doreen re-read this book, which was reviewed by Gill at the previous meeting. She found that she didn't like it at all, though it was very well written. On reflection, she felt that the reason for disliking it was the way it treated women - which was rather offensive.

Andrew really enjoyed this. (Doreen didn't - thought women were just sex objects)

There had been much discussion, and difference of opinion, about this book's treatment of women at the last book group meeting, which made me want to read this to see what I would make of it. Very disappointed to discover, after a chapter or two, that I had already read it and that it had made so little impression on me that I hadn't even remembered the title or opening chapter. Stopped reading at this point. Not recommended.
