Ship Fever
Andrea Barrett
A series of short stories about the lives of scientific men seen from the point of view of the women in their lives. Caroline likes short stories with a bit of meat on them and these do. She agreed with all the superlatives on the back of the book

A quick read of short stories and a novella with a historical background wonderfully written and set in Canada. Highly recommended.

This is a collection of short stories. Many are about Victorian women interested in scientific subjects and they are dismissed. The last story (90 pages) is about ships taking Irish emigrants to Canada: this is powerful and moving.

Another collection of short stories, all with a scientific theme. Some were skipped as they didn't engage but others were very good, particularly the story about the eighteenth century scholars, including Linnaeus, who believed swallows didn't migrate in the winter but instead hibernated under water.
