This is the life story of Karen Armstrong who became a nun at the age of 17. She left the order seven years later when she was no longer able to find god. The order she joined was a teaching order so she studied at Oxford University where she obtained a first but her subsequent PhD thesis was failed. By chance she discovers she is good at presenting TV programmes which leads her to a new career. The book includes other difficulties that she has had to overcome such as epilepsy which was undiagnosed for a long time.

The title of the book is taken from T.S.Eliot poem Ash Wednesday
